| Taking the translated version of Fortress Besieged as its subject and conceptualblending theory as its theoretical basis, the thesis aims to analyze the translationprocess of the humorous language in Fortress Besieged by employing a newlyconstructed translation network model. After illustrating the basic framework and four networks of conceptual blendingtheory, the study applies the theory to the translation process and then proposes adeveloped network model of translation: the source language space (Input I) is madeby the source language text and its cultural cognitive schema while the translator’sspace (Input II) consists of the target language, its cultural cognitive schema as well.Influenced by the generic thinking space, the emergent structure is formed when thetwo input spaces are projecting to the translation space jointly. Therefore, a newexpression, the translation result comes into being.Based on the developed translation network model, the thesis divides thehumorous language in Fortress Besieged into five categories, i.e metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification and pun, to reveal the explanatory power of CBT.The guidance of conceptual blending theory on humorous language translationcan not only improve translators’ understanding on the translation process ofhumorous language, but also enrich conceptual blending theory’s explanatory powerand extend its application. In particular, by verifying its explanatory power on theliterature translation, it serves as an example for the translation studies on otherChinese literature works, and other languages with Chinese characteristics. |
