In the21stcentury, against the backdrop of economic globalization, economic, political and cultural exchange and cooperation between China and the rest of theworld has been on the increase. Many cities, especially those directly under the centralgovernment attach much importance to the development of international economic andcultural exchange, which is evidenced by the widespread use of Chinese-Englishbilingual public signs, thus making C-E translation of public signs a hot issue intranslation circles. However, it has been found that many problems still exist with theC-E translation of public signs, including mistranslation, redundancy, inconsistencyand incomprehensibility. Therefore, improving the quality of public sign translationsmatters largely. This study presents an analysis and classification of the commonerrors outstanding in public sign translations based on the CP. According to the fourmaxims of the CP, a model for assessing the quality of public sign translations isestablished to guide the translation practice of public signs.
