As a leading figure in Aesthetic Movement in the19thcentury, Oscar Wilde isfamous for his The Picture of Dorian Gray, which not only is a masterpiece ofaestheticism, but also embodies Western civilization. Similarly, Pu Songling, a famousnovelist in Qing Dynasty, whose Strange Tales from Make-Do Studio reflects Easterncivilization and literary tradition.By using the methods of textual analysis and cross-civilization study, this paperstudies the aesthetic similarities and differences between Oscar Wilde’s The Picture ofDorian Gray and Pu Songling’s Strange Tales from Make-Do Studio, and analyzes thedifferent cultural origins which lead to the different and similar aesthetic pursuit of thetwo works. Through interpretation of the human-oriented Western culture andethic-oriented Eastern culture, the meanings and values of the two works are furtherstudied, and in the meanwhile, it is conducive to promoting equal dialogue andcommunication between Eastern and Western Cultures. |
