| Cohesion is one of the most important features of text. Whether a text iscomplete or not relies heavily on the cohesive relations between sentences. As theepitome of corporate image, performance and culture, corporate profiles becomepart and parcel of publicity materials of a company. However, previous studies inthis field were mainly conducted from the perspective of Skopos Theory, receptiontheory, etc., thus the guiding role of Cohesion Theory to the translation of corporateprofiles receives little attention. On the basis of Halliday and Hasan’s Cohesion Theory, this thesis collects andanalyzes Chinese corporate profiles and their translations of10companies rankingamong Fortune China500in the real estate industry. It attempts to provide a newresearch angle for the study on the translation of corporate profiles through the useof qualitative analysis. The major findings of the study can be seen as follows. First, there aresimilarities and differences between cohesion in Chinese corporate profiles and theirtranslations. Chinese corporate profiles do not use as many as cohesive devices asEnglish ones. Second, the reasons behind such differences lie in synthetic thinkingor analytic thinking, parataxis or hypotaxis, topic-prominent or subject-prominentand high-context or low-context. Third, when it comes to translation of corporateprofiles, attention should be paid to the cohesive relations inside a sentence orbetween sentences. |
