At present there are more and more foreigners who learn Chinese as a foreignlanguage (CFL) and they cannot avoid many Chinese culture-bound words.Chinese-bound words are words that are peculiar to Chinese culture. They can bedivided into two categories. Words in category1, refer to those that do not exist inEnglish; words of category2, refer to those that share the same conceptual meaningwith their corresponding expressions in another language but differ in culturalmeaning. In most cases, they cannot find or can only find partial equivalents in othercultures, which causes a problem for CFL learners. At the same time, the present Chinese-English dictionaries still have manyproblems and they cannot satisfy the need of CFL learners. So this thesis will explorehow to apply the MDD into definition of Chinese culture-bound words inChinese-English dictionaries for CFL learners by a comparative analysis of thetraditional definitions on Chinese culture-bound words and definitions of Chineseculture-bound words in three present Chinese-English dictionaries for CFL learners. The MDD is based on the multidimensional feature of meaning representation. The nature of Chinese-English dictionary definition is the projection of semanticframe schema based on prototype communicative pattern rather than exploration ofequivalence of lexicon on conceptual level. The author attempts to apply MDD intodefining Chinese culture-bound words in Chinese-English dictionaries for CFL andconstructs MDD pattern for Chinese culture-bound words. It is hoped that thisdefining pattern can provide more easy-understanding and comprehensive informationfor CFL learners.
