Movies have played a significant role in cultural transmission. With the further development of China sopening-up and the rapid development of Chinese economy, the communication between China and othercountries is becoming closer and closer in all fields, especially in culture, among which, the share of movies arelarger. Every year, China imports a large number of foreign movies. Meanwhile, more and more Chinese moviesare exported to foreign countries and attract more attentions. Therefore, movie subtitle translation is becomingincreasingly important in the process of cultural communication. The thesis attempts to study movie subtitletranslation by combining the qualitative and quantitative research methods from the perspective of ReceptionAesthetics.The Reception Aesthetics is an important literary theory, which focuses on the study of the reader, becausedifferent readers have different understanding in the text. A text can be regarded as works, when they areaccepted by readers. The Reception Aesthetics demands an analysis of the readers in all directions. Thus, the textcan be accepted by the readers and can achieve a fusion of horizon between them to some degree.The thesis, firstly gives a general study on movie subtitle translation and researches on it. Secondly, themovie subtitle translation, as a special literature translation, is a varied process of fusion of horizon, whichcontains the fusion of horizon between the text and the translator and the fusion of horizon between the translatorand the reader. In this process, the translator s first role is a reader, then a translator. What the translator shoulddo first is to accept and understand the original meaning of the text. The process is not passive and arbitrary, butto achieve the process of fusion of horizon by the translator approaching the expectation of the text according tothe translator s previous knowledge and experience. At the same time, the translator should pay attention to theaudiences needs and abilities of acceptance. The thesis elaborates factors affecting the process of fusion ofhorizon separately. Then, on the side of readers, the author use a quantitative method to research the realaudiences. One hundred questionnaires have been hand out to them, and then the answers are collected andanalyzed. Form the investigation, the author finds the audiences characteristics and their needs for moviesubtitle translation. At last, some useful strategies and methods are analyzed with concrete examples and theauthor attempts to improve several imperfect examples.The author believes that under the guidance of Aesthetics Reception, the translator not only conveys theoriginal meaning of the text exactly, but also keeps the unique artistic charm of movies. By this way, thetranslated subtitle can cater for the audiences aesthetic needs and they can enjoy the exotic flavor of foreign movies comfortably. |
