As learning theory develops, the study of English Learning Strategies has beenone topic continuously concerned by researchers. Based on the previous studies, thispaper aims to inquire into the relationships between Gender Roles and EnglishLearning Strategies in non-English learners from the perspective of PsychologyGender Roles theory. The study instruments are BSRI and SILL with interview.Using quantitative and qualitative research methods,322non-English majors areinvolved in and20are interviewed. The paper mainly focuses on three issues.(1)What’s the gender roles distribution of non-English majors?(2)Is there anydifference among the learners’ learning strategies in different gender roles? If there is,what’s the difference?(3)What types of gender roles of learners can make better useof learning strategies?According to the result, the main findings are as following:(1)Gender roles are clearly formed in non-English majors. Masculinity andfemininity are more than70%; androgyny and undifferentiated accounts for only asmall part below30%.From the high to the low percentage, the gender roles are:masculinity,femininity, androgyny and undifferentiated.(2)There are large differences among different gender roles of learners in usingEnglish learning strategies. In memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensationstrategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies, it hasshown a general trend that androgyny is better than the female, female is better thanmale, male is better than undifferentiated. Androgyny learners are the best users andundifferentiated learners are the worst users in English learning strategies.(3)Androgyny learners set good models for others in using English learningstrategies. They can bring direct and indirect strategies together in using all kinds ofEnglish learning strategies.The paper get results in the choice and difference of English learning strategiesof different gender students, which will help to non-English majors in the rightformation of sex roles and better choice of English learning strategies. At the sametime the finding will cast light on some teaching thoughts and methods such asStudent-centered Teaching, Teaching Students in Accordance with Their Aptitudeand Complementing Each other during Study.
