The Reproduction Of Art Of Beautifulization In Xu’s English Translation Of Li Bai’s Poetry

Li Bai is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of Tang Dynasty. And his poetry is arepresentative of the High Tang culture. So far, many scholars from abroad and at homehave translated and studied the translation of Li Bai’s poetry. However, according to theinformation that the writer has obtained at present, the study from the aspect of Art ofBeautifulization theory is still rare. So the writer tries to take Xu’s English translation ofLi Bai’s poems as an example, to study the reproduction of Art of Beautifulization.Art of Beautifulization theory is an important theory in Chinese translation field,which contains three aspects, namely,“San Mei, San Hua and San Zhi”. Moreover, thesethree aspects are inseparable as a whole.“San Mei” is the ontology, which aims to makethe translation maintain the original beauty in sense, sound and form as much as possible.“San Hua” is the methodology, according to which translators can adopt the methods ofgeneralization, equalization and particularization to achieve the effect of “San Mei”.“SanZhi” is the teleology, which includes comprehension, appreciation and admiration. Onlywith the application of “San Hua”, translators can reproduce the original beauty in sense,sound and form at most. Then the target readers can comprehend or appreciate theoriginal text, and even admire or delight in the translation. Art of Beautifulization givesan overall angle for the study of poetic translation from the aspects of “San Mei”,“SanHua” and “San Zhi”. What’s more, the reproduction of Art of Beautifulization theory inLi Bai’s poems has its special charm, which can convey the sense and rhyme completely.This thesis contains seven chapters. The first chapter is the introduction ofbackground and significance of the study, the research methods, objective and questionsand the structure of the thesis. The second chapter is literature review, which introducesthe review of the translation of Li Bai’s poems and Xu Yuanchong’s Art of Beautifulization theory in China and abroad. The third chapter introduces the formationand development of Xu Yuanchong’s Art of Beautifulization theory. Based on that, thefourth, fifth and sixth chapters analyze the reproduction of Art of Beautifulization theoryin Xu’s English translation of Li Bai’s poems from three aspects:“San Mei”,“San Hua”and “San Zhi”. The last chapter is the conclusion, namely, the major findings andlimitations of the study, and suggestions for further study.Based on the previous study, in this thesis the writer will adopt literature reviewapproach and systematic analytical approach to analyze the reproduction of Art ofBeautifulization in Xu’s English translation of Li Bai’s poetry. Then it proves theimportance and feasibility of Art of Beautifulization in the translation of poetry. By theabove analysis, this thesis gets the following conclusion: the Art of Beautifulization ofXu Yuanchong is successfully reproduced in his translation of poems by Li Bai, whichindicates that a systematic application of the Art of Beautifulization by Xu can be of greatpractical and theoretical importance and guidance to the translation of poetry to someextent in that it can keep the poetic beauty of the original poems to the utmost.
