As a "Literal translation style" work of Mongolian history, the "History of Yuan Dynasty" is endowed with distinctive language features in vocabulary, grammar and other aspects comparing with the Chinese language features in the same period. The book contains a large number of Mongolian names and geographical names. Thus the mode of translation is significantly incondite, and plenty of errors exist in the Chinese transcription of these names. Until now it is impossible to reconstruct their correct pronunciation. As a biographical history work, the" History of Yuan Dynasty", chronologically, has strong sense of layers. The Mongols dominated the Central Plain of China, Asia and Europe for more than300years. Their glorious military achievement is still praised by the world. Unfortunately, due to some objective reasons and the conditions of nomadic life, the compilation of the history of the Yuan Dynasty has not ended with a successful outcome. Although "History of Yuan Dynasty" is full of loopholes, it has tremendous historical value and far-reaching meaning on the historical study.By using the methods of translation studies, linguistics and philology, this thesis explores the translation of personal names, geographical names and tribal names appeared in the first volume of the "History of Yuan Dynasty".This thesis is divided into three chapters:The first chapter gives an introduction to "History of Yuan Dynasty", backgrounds of its compilation and the problems existed in its compilation, and presents a review of previous studies on the work; The second chapter discusses the issues in the translation of personal names and geographical names in "History of Yuan Dynasty"(Vol. I). Furthermore, it discusses thoroughly the objective and subjective factors in the process of translation of "History of Yuan Dynasty"(Vol. I); The third chapter is the main part. It selectively analyzes and discusses the phenomena and characteristics of the translation of "History of Yuan Dynasty"(Vol. I). Simultaneously comparing with the "Secret History of the Mongols " and other related Mongolian literature, it identifies and discusses the mistranslation and leaky translation in "History of Yuan Dynasty"(Vol.1).
