Teng Wang Pavilion is world-famous for an article called “Preface of TengWang Pavilion”, written by Tang Dynasty poet Bo Wang; it also ranks first among theThree Great Pavilions in the Southern Regions of China. However, Prince LiYuanying, the Owner of the pavilion is rarely appears on any historical document,while the records of “Teng Style Butterfly Panting” which originated by him is evenmore rare and only appears on few poetry and articles from olden days. This essayattempts to systematically analyse Teng style butterfly panting by looking at theexisting historical documents, literatures and poet anthology, and provide referencesfor further studies on the development of Chinese flower-and-bird painting. This taskprovides a more comprehensive understanding of Tang Dynasty flower-and-birdpainting through the research of Li Yuanying and his Teng style butterfly painting, aswell as its profound influence on the later butterfly painting. Chapter One summariesthe origin, development and the historical status of Teng style butterfly pantingthrough referencing and analysing the existing historical documents and literatures aswell as Prince Li Yuanying’s life, character, specialty and hobbies;Chapter Twoconcludes the unique characteristic of Teng style butterfly painting by analysing theworks of Teng Style butterfly painting and comparing it with later butterflypainting;Chapter Three analyse the influence on the later generation, especially thecontribution to the development of Chinese flower-and-bird painting through thefurther understanding of the origin and development of Teng style butterfly panting.
