German scholar Simmel’s theory is often considered as fragmental, emotional and lack of construction of system. It is caused by multiple causes. Firstly, the study object of Simmel is the rapidly changing pictures in modern urban society, and it is fragmental object. Simmel’s concerning perspective is different from many scholastics, he likes to observe the city life of new things, especially sex, fashion, religion, prostitution, adventure and so on, which are considered as "edge" field by the scholastics. His attentions for these areas derived from the fragments of urban life, as a montage of scenes which lack of continuity and systemic. Secondly, in the way of academic writing, Simmel prefers to choose essay way with elegant poetic language rather than full-length works on construction of theory system. Most importantly, Simmel has an unique academic research methods of himself. He always pay attention to the thought process, instead of the thinking results; focus on philosophical reflection, but not the construction of philosophical system. In the academic study, Simmel is accustomed to start from the feeling and experience of the city people’s modern life, to derive and analyze the overall characteristics of modern society from the phenomena and feelings of urban life which full of details, chase for the ultimate purpose and meaning of modern life. In a word, his method is from the fragment to the overall, in other words, from the center to the totality.In this article, the author focus on Simmei’s detail research of modern urban phenomenon, in the way of detailed analysis to his opinions to the senses and experience of the city people, following his thinking pathway. Starting with the analysis of the sensory system in order to find the foundation of modern urbanite perceptual existence, and then from his research of life the aesthetic experience to understand the modern spirit and survival status, so as to find the reasons, purpose and meanings of the Simmel’s research ideas and research methods. Remove the introduction and conclusion, the main body of the article consists of three parts, and all of them around Simmel’s research methods which from fragment to totality. The first part is to reveal the background and reason of Simmel’s research methods, which from the point view of his own life, the learning experience and attitude. The purpose of the second part is further explain his research methods, in the way of detailed analysis of the text, mainly including sensory and aesthetic experience two parts. The third part is to summarize the characteristics of Simmel’s research methods.Simmel’s academic research is a life philosophy, and with his efforts, the life philosophy is accepted by the people such as art-like flags in the world. Through pay attention to individual feeling and experience, he found that people’s lives have been isolated by developed rational mechanism and monetary economy, they become fragmented, people’s senses and experience evolve toward the shrinking feeling of life and over sensitive of nearby stimulation which two seemingly opposite direction. Through the observation and analysis of a series of modern life phenomenon of fashion, adventure and tourism, Simmel looks for a valuable quality of the individual soul in modern society and the true feeling of the individual life. Simmel’s research method does start off the debris of personal feel and experience of the phenomenon in modern life, it never ends at the debris, but the ultimate concern of life.
