In1840, Hong Kong, the "Oriental Pearl", was subject to the colonial rule in the following century. On one hand, under such circumstances, western culture has permeated into all aspects of the Hong Kong people’s life; On the other hand, the Chinese traditional culture has taken root in the hearts of the Hong Kong people over generations. So for a long time, the cultural identity of Hong Kong is a mixture that is featured by both unique colonialism and distinctive national characteristics. At the end of1970s, China and Britain began to negotiate on the sovereignty of Hong Kong, thus giving rise to the disputes on the identity of Hong Kong people. Since the issuance of China-Britain Joint Statements in particular, the awareness of the identity of Hong Kong people has been aroused, a process of exploration lasting for thirty years. At this very time, films, as a media reflecting the social culture, vividly give full expression to the crisis of identity and unsettlement Hong Kong people. After1980s especially, Hong Kong films have played a paramount role in redefining the relations between Mainland China and Hong Kong, affirmation of identity and tracing their roots. On the basis of research on the Hong Kong films from1979to2012, the author classifies these films into three periods, namely the1980s period,1990period and the posy-1997period. Nowadays the Hong Kong people have get rid of the drifting and pessimistic mentality brought about by identity crisis, integrated into the Chinese culture and completed the transition of identities after undergoing detestation to the world in1980s and the loss and hesitation in the1990s. However, recent years have seen the prosperity in the film industry in Hong Kong.
