Narrative is a form of social existence, a behaviour that affect on interpersonalrelationships and thus obtaining social significance. In a multilingual, pluralistic society, it hasbeen a trend to fight against hegemonies and to promote equality of dialogue and exchangebetween subjects. This change is also reflected in narrative works, in which characters are nolonger the mouthpiece of the author, but an independent voice, forming the main body ofliterature in addition to the author. Thus, the position of the values embodied in the narrativeworks changed from single to diversified. The narrative level is the exchanging platformbetween subjects. Through an in-depth study on narrative level, we can clearly see that thenarrative works reflecting the diversity of life and diversification of human values andliterature intersubjective exchange situation.After researching the state of the art theory about narrative level, we need further studyon the classification, functionality and significance. First of all, we discussed the definition ofthe narrative level, believing there exists a separate level above the text containing both authorand readers. Secondly, there exists3different styles of narrative level: linear, parallel and tree.In each style, taking ancient and modern narrative works as examples, a detailed analysis onnarrative level is given. The author, reader as well as characters in narrative level areconsidered as subjects with independent voice, representing different value standpoint. At last,the function and significance of narrative level is discussed. Narrative level possesses not onlyideographic and aesthetic function, but also extends the connotation of the novels. In narrativelevel, the subjects communicate with each other, surpassing the relationship of interests. Inthis process, every subject confirmed his existence respect to himself as well as others’sexistence, making mutual understanding possible, expanding the connotation and extension ofthe novels.
