The Clinical Studies Of Protein-Energy Wasting Syndrome On Peritoneal Dialysis Patients With Carotid Atherosclerosis

Objective:The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of PEW in peritoneal dialysis patients with carotid atherosclerosis and its association with atherosclerosis.Methods:Ninety-six patients on maintenance dialysis were studied after 3 months peritoneal dialysis initiation,fifty-one patients suffer from carotid atherosclerosis. Biochemical,anthropometric and dietary diary were collected in accordance with the criteria of the new definition. Also,the carotid artery intima thickness(c IMT) was measured.Later on,diagnosis of PEW was made based on new diagnostic criteria. Subjects were subgrouped according to their nutritional status.Correlation between PEW and carotid artery intima thickness were analyzed statistically.Results:The prevalence of PEW was 51.04% in peritoneal dialysis patients;while it was higher in PD patients with carotid atherosclerosis. The presence of PEW was associated with atherosclerosis in PD patients.Among PEW patients,The mean and standard deviation of anthropometry variables of body mass index、arm muscle circumference、and albumin、total cholesterol was lower in patients with atherosclerosis;two groups also compared in total bilirubin、high-sensitivity C-reactive protein、blood pressure、glucose、calcium 、 phosphor,the difference was meaningless.c IMT negatively correlated with serum albumin,total bilirubin and BMI,but positively correlated with serumhigh-sensitivity C-reactive protein(r=0.446,P<0.05).Conclusion:Protein-energy wasting was very prevalent among peritoneal dialysis patients with carotid atherosclerosis.Our data suggest that PEW are closely linked to atherosclerosis in PD patients.PEW may can be described as a non-traditional risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
