Objective Tuberous sclerosis complex(TSC) is a multiorgan disorder and mostly associated with intractable epilepsy. Now several individual reports suggest that epilepsy in children with TSC might benefit from a ketogenic diet(KD).We Prospectively studied the curative effect of 14 children with the KD in the treatment of TSC with epilepsy. Methods This study enrolled 14 patients with TSC and epilepsy who received KD therapy in Children’s Hospital of Shenzhen from March 2015 to March2008,Follow up time was at least 3 months.By comparing the frequency of epileptic seizures in patients before and after KD treatment, children were followed up for at least 3 months.Recording the change of antiepileptic drugs’ dose, adverse reactions and changes in cognitive function of children to assess the KD therapy efficacy. Results 12 children had refractory epilepsy in 14 children, all of 14 children adhere to KD treatment for 3 months, 7(7/14, 50%) children had a >50% reduction in theirseizures,5(5/14,36%) children had control seizure completely,6(6/14,42.8%)chidren adhere to KD treatment for 6months,4(4/14,28.6%) children had control seizure completely.2 children had reduced the dose or type of AEDs,one child does not use any antiepileptic drugs during KD treatment.12 of 14 children had developmental delays, and 6 children had cognitive function improvement. Conclusions KD was a generally effective and safe therapy for children with TSC and epilepsy, especially refractory epilepsy.KD could reduce antiepileptic drugs, and also improved children’s congnitive function.
