Thyroid hormone has the capacity of regulating the body’s growth and development, and the metabolism of body, it can affect various organs and tissues such as the heart, muscle, kidney and brain. In recent years, there are many studies about the interaction between thyroid hormone and kidney.Thyroid hormone not only promotes the growth and development of the kidneys but also plays an important role in the maintenance of normal kidney function, so selecting the renal indicators need to consider the status of thyroid function. At the same time, many studies have shown that patients with a variety of kidney diseases are found with thyroid dysfunction, data from clinical studies suggest that low level of thyroid hormone can predict the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with end-stage renal disease and total mortality, however the causal link has not been elucidated; and chronic kidney disease complicated with hypothyroidism whether need for replacement therapy remains to be further resolved. Given the close relationship between thyroid function and kidney in consideration, in this review, we discuss the thyroid hormone’s effects onrenal function and mechanisms, the changes of renal function marks when thyroid dysfunction, the mechanism of thyroid dysfunction caused by chronic kidney disease, and the alternative treatment of chronic kidney disease complicated with hypothyroidism.
