Lung cancer is one of the most fatal cancer worldwide, its incidence and mortality are growing fast.At the same time, metformin is a kind of biguanides as first-line drug that has been used worldwide to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Recent years, several studies revealed that there is a lower incidence of disease and death from cancer in patients with diabetes mellitus treated with metformin than those treated with other anti-diabetic agents. Metformin also can inhibit tumor cell growth, increase the tumor cell-killing effect of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. It has been reported that metformin has certain effect on reversing chemotherapy drug resistance. All above, prospects may look promising for the clinical application of metformin as a new type of antitumor drugs.
