Objective : To analysis the serum uric acid levels in multiple sclerosis(MS) and neuromyelitis optica(NMO)patients. Discussing the role of serum uric acid in the pathogenesis of MS and NMO,which were helpful for the treatment of MS and NMO.Methods : Relapsing and remitting multiple sclerosis( RRMS)patients 129 cases were collected as MS group.Patients in MS group would be divided into MS-relapsing group and MS-remitting group according to different attack period.Neuromyelitis optica patients 44 cases were collected as NMO group.Healthy people were collected as control group.Disability status of MS and NMO patients was evaluated by EDSS scale. The serum UA levels were compared among groups according to the clinical characteristics such as sex,age and disability status.Using SPSS19.0to analysis the relationship between MS,NMO and UA levels.P<0.05 was statistically significant.Results:1.The comparison of general men and women constitute about MS is1:1.93 and NMO is 1:7.80,the average age of MS is 40.60 ± 14.14 years,NMO is 38.36±13.62 years.2.The serum UA levels of MS group was significantly lower than control group, the differences had statistically significance(P < 0.05).The serum UA levels of MS-relapsing group was significantly lower than MS-remitting group, the differences had statistically significant(P <0.05).However,the concentration of serum uric acid was not different in the MS-remitting group and control group(P>0.05).3.The serum uric acid levels of female were significantly lower than male in MS-relapsing group, the differences had statistically significance(P<0.05).But the serum uric acid levels of female and male in MS-remitting group were not different(P>0.05).Among MS patients of female, the UA levels of MS-relapsing group were significantly lower than MS-remitting group and control group(P<0.05).Among MS patients of male, the serum UA levels of MS-relapsing group,MS-remitting group and control group were not different(P>0.05).4.The serum UA levels of MS group with>40years were significantly lower than patients with≤40years(P<0.05).5.There were no relationship between the serum UA levels and age, courses of disease(P > 0.05),but inversely correlate with EDSS scores(P<0.05).6.The serum UA levels of NMO group were significantly lower than control group(P<0.05).But the serum UA levels was not different in theMS-relapsing group and NMO group(P>0.05).Conclusions:1.MS and NMO were found occurred almostly in middle-aged patients. The prevalence rate of women in MS and NMO were higher than that in males.2.The serum uric acid level in MS patients decreased mainly in female. The lack of uric acid in vivo can influence the appearance and progression of multiple sclerosis to some extent. And the serum UA may be a protector of MS.3.The serum levels of UA were closely related with dysfunction occurring in MS.The lower the UA level of the patients, the harder nervous system dysfunction.4.Low serum UA levels may be correlated with the pathological mechanism of NMO.The levels of serum UA were not significantly different between MS and NMO patients.5.Improving the levels of UA in vivo may provide new ideas for the treatment of MS and NMO.
