ObjectiveEducation of medication can help patients understand the disease and drug treatment, enhance patients’ understanding of the drug, improve treatment compliance, help them get rid of bad habits of medication, help them acknowledge the wrong understandings of medication, help them understand adverse reactions of common drug and help them solve the problems related to medication by themselves. This thesis assessed the effects of giving education of medication on GLU of the seniors with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM)in communities, their medication acquisition of knowledge, attitude and practice(KAP),and their use and adverse reactions of hypoglycemic agent, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of education of medication and enhance the pertinence of education of medication, improve the comprehensive efficacy of hypoglycemic agent, reduce fiscal burden of government and provide theory to help patients take medicines safely, effectively and rationally.MethodThis thesis mainly has four parts:1.Questionnaire survey done by the seniors with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM) incommunities before they take education of medication was collected so as to get the information about patients’ acquisition on KAP of medication, their use and adverse reaction rate of hypoglycemic agents, and the glucose status of the patients etc.2.A control group and a treatment group were designed. Patients with Type 2 DM in the treatment group were given education of medication and its content includes: what are the commonly used hypoglycemic agents; what are the precautions of taking special formulations; the relationship between diet, exercise, emotion, and taking hypoglycemic agents; related knowledge of hypoglycemic traditional Chinese medicine; what are the common adverse reactions of taking hypoglycemic agents; the importance of treatment compliance; and common misunderstandings of medication etc. Forms of education include: giving a lecture for mass patients, giving out Educational Booklet on Diabetes Medication and providing one on one guiding etc.3.Questionnaire survey done by the seniors with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM) in communities after they take education of medication was collected so as to get the information about patients’ acquisition on KAP of medication, their use and adverse reaction rate of hypoglycemic agents, and the glucose status of the patients etc.4.SPSS19.0 was used to gather and process data after the questionnaires were done by the patients before and after having education of medication. The data results were used to analyze and evaluate the effects of this education of medication. Analysis methods included: descriptive analysis, t test, chi-square test, and non parametric test- rank-sum test etc. Testing bench mark was set α=0.05 and P < 0.05 so as to display the data differences.Result1.Specific steps of “giving education of medication to the seniors with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM) in communities and the evaluation of its effects”were formed, which included: setting assessment index, deciding the forms, deciding the time and frequency, deciding the content, deciding the questionnaire, selecting community health service center, deciding the lecturer, recruiting research patients, dividing the research patients into groups, conducting questionnaire survey before they have education of medication and measuringtheir GLU, conducting the first time of education of medication, conducting the second time of education of medication, conducting questionnaire survey after they have education of medication, logging data and conducting statistic analysis etc.2.According to recruiting and screening criteria, there were 33 people in the control group and 35 people in the treatment group.3. Before education of medication, compare the general information, diabetes medication acquisition of KAP, their use and adverse reaction rate of hypoglycemic agents, and the glucose status of the patients between treatment group and control group. The comparison results indicated that the two groups were comparable because the compared items of the patients in the two groups had no significant differences(P> 0.05).4. After the education of medication, the comparison results of the two groups indicated : the education of medication can greatly enhance the diabetes medication acquisition of KAP(P<0.05); the education of medication had little influence on the percentages of using hypoglycemic agents in the both groups(P>0.05); the education of medication can greatly reduce the rate of adverse reactions(P<0.05); and the target rate of GLU of the two groups increased slightly(P>0.05).Conclusion1.This study accomplished the methods of giving education of medication to the seniors with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM) in communities, established the working program, forms and content of education of medication and standardized the specific steps of giving education of medication to the seniors with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM) in communities.2.Education of medication can enhance the medication acquisition of the seniors with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM) in communities, help them set up right attitude towards medication, increase the treatment compliance and reduce the rate of adverse reactions. As for patients with chronic diseases, it’s important to carry out standardized education of medication for them.
