Objective:The aim of this study was to determine serum BNP and plasma HCY levels, and to explore the relationship among plasma HCY and serum BNP and left ventricular diastolic function in type 2 diabetic patients.Methods:NT-pro BNP and HCY levels were measured in 60 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. According to the level of HCY, diabetic patients were divided into two groups:hyperhomocysteinemia group(DM+HCY group,HCY≧15umol/L) or normal homocysteinemia(DM group). The control group consisted of 30 healthy subjects. All diabetic patients and controls underwent transthoracic echocardiography, Myocardial contraction and diastolic functions were evaluated by measuring the valvular functions by color Doppler, record mitral flow E and A wave velocities and E/A ratio and ejection fraction.Results:Serum BNP levels in diabetic patients with hyperhomocysteinemia were significantly higher than in diabetic patients with normal homocysteinemia and controls,and were related with HCY(P<0.001, r=0.843) and E/A ratio(P<0.001, r=-0.794).E/A ratio were significantly lower in DM+HCY groups than in DM groups and controls,and negative correlation was noted between HCY levels and E/A ratio(r=-0.913,P<0.001). After mult-variable linear return, the the relationship still exists.Conclusion:The correlation among BNP and HCY and levels in left ventricular diastolic functions in type 2 diabetes mellitus suggest that Homocysteine is a new risk factor of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. HCY and BNP may be the makers of early prediction and evaluation left ventricular diastolic function in patients with type 2 diabetes.
