Objective:The purpose of this study was to investigate the hearing and speech recognition ability of children with large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS) after cochlear implantation surgery, compare their performance with those of children with a normal inner ear. Discuss the influence of the structure of mild cochlear malformation after cochlear implantation hearing and speech recognition ability.Method:28 children with congenital severe to profound hearing loss participated in this study.14 children in LVAS group were diagnose with LVAS.14 children in matched group had normal inner ear. After surgery two groups ①pure tone test in sound field were used to evaluate the development of auditory ability ②infant-toddler meaningful auditory integration scale/meaningful auditory integration scale (IT-MAIS/MAIS)、 categories of auditory performance (CAP) and speech intelligibility rating (SIR) were used to evaluate the development of auditory skills.③Closed-set speech perception tests on Mandarin tones, words and sentences were assess the development of auditory skills.Results:①pure tone test in sound field is 36.88±5.73dB in LVAS,35.36±6.29dB in nonsyndromic hearing loss(NSHL). There is no significant difference between two groups (P>0.05). ②The scores for the ITMAIS/MAIS is 87.85±8.01in LVAS, 87.85±9.74 in NSHL, showed no significant difference between two groups(P>0.05). The scores for CAP is 7(7,7) in LVAS,6.5(6,7) in NSHL showed significant difference between two groups(P<0.05). The scores for SIR is 5(5,5) in LVAS,4.5(4,5) in NSHL showed significant difference between two groups(P<0.05). ③Double syllable recognition scores is 98.81±2.81 in LVAS, and 96.62±6.80 in NSHL. Trisyllabic word recognition scores is 98.86±1.88 in LVAS, and 96.43±6.19 in NSHL. Double syllable recognition and trisyllabic word recognition showed significant difference between two groups(P<0.05). The rest of six parts of speech perception showed no significant difference between two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion:Auditory skills of children with LVAS after cochlear implantation, in a similar manner to those of children with a normal inner ear. Large vestibular aqueduct syndrome patients score or even better than the latter in CAP, SIR, double syllable recognition and trisyllabic word recognition.
