Objectives:To evaluate clinical efficacy and safety of the various surgical treatment of upper urinary tract stones in children and to investigate the risk factors of the recurrence of calculus. Methods:Retrospective review was performed for 170 patients younger than 14 years who underwent upper urinary tract stones surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University between 2004 and 2014, and had at mean 20 months of follow-up. Operative effect, residual stone rate, recurrence rate, and anatomical abnormalities were assessed. Results:Overall, stone-free status was achieved in 76%of patients, and the success rate was 91%3 months after operation. Stones recurred in 36 of 185 renal units (19.4%) during a mean follow-up of 20 months. The recurrence rates were 3.8%, 9.5%, and 24.3%after 1,2,3 years, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that residual stone significantly influenced recurrence. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that residual stone was significantly related to recurrence. Conclusions:Residual stone is the high risk factor of the recurrence of calculi. The minimally invasive lithotripsy is safe and effective in the treatment of upper urinary tract stones in children.
