Analysis And Management Of Postoperative Complications In Childhood Craniopharyngioma

Objective:To discuss the clinical features and therapy of common childhood craniopharyngioma(CP) postoperative complications, and compared with the incidence of adult craniopharyngioma postoperative complications.Methods:Retrospectively reviewed 20 cases of childhood craniopharyngioma from January 2012 to December 2015 who received micro surgery treatment in department of neurosurgery of the second affiliated hospital, school of medicine, Zhejiang University. These 20 cases diagnosed as CP were included as group CP. Meantime reviewed 60 cases of adult craniopharyngioma from January 2012 to December 2015 who received micro surgery treatment in department of neurosurgery of the second affiliated hospital, school of medicine, Zhejiang University. These 60 cases were included as the control group. Data were recorded including clinical manifestation, imaging, tumor resection and postoperative complications.Results:In childhood CP group, the complications included:15 cases of diabetes insipidus (75.0%),16 cases of electrolyte disorder(80.0%),11 cases of pituitary dysfunction(55.0%),5 cases of central high fever(25.0%),2 cases of epileptic seizures(10.0%),2 cases of impaired consciousness(10.0%). In adult CP group, the complications included:38 cases of diabetes insipidus (63.3%),34 cases of electrolyte disorder(53.7%),29 cases of pituitary dysfunction(43.3%),8 cases of central high fever(13.3%),4 cases of epileptic seizures(6.7%),6 cases of impaired consciousness(10.0%).There are no statistical difference in the incidence of craniopharyngioma postoperative complications between two groups.Conclusion:Childhood postoperative craniopharyngioma complications are various and complex, but there are no statistical difference compared with the adult CP group. Treatment of postoperative complications are very important and directly affect patients’quality of life.
