Objective:This study aims to assess the patient empowerment status of inpatient with chronic illness, to explore patients’perception, need and experience of being empowered. To analyze the influence factors of patient empowerment in inpatient with chronic illness, to provide a scientific reference to improve patient empowerment status of inpatient with chronic illness.Methods:Patients with chronic illness were surveyed in a first-class hospital of Hangzhou.Questionnaires which have been used in the quantitative research included: General Information Questionnaire, Chinese Version of Patient Perception of Empowerment Scale,General Self-efficacy Scale, Chinese Version of Chronic Illness Resource Survey Scale, Nurse-patient Trust Scale. Spssl 7.0 was adopted to analyze the data of the quantitative research. The qualitative research used the purposive sampling method to collect patients, the semi-structured interview was conducted to collect data of patients who meet the inclusion criteria. Nvivo10.0 was adopted to extract themes of the interview based on the phenomenological analysis method.Results:(1) The total score of patient empowerment was 42.74±4.83.the score of the information dimension was 10.74±1.86,the score of the decision dimension was 7.33±1.47, the score of the individual dimension was 12.18±1.84, the score of the self-management dimension was 12.50±1.50.(2) Significant differences of demographic feature were found in the PPES among patients with chronic illness on variables like:educational degree, monthly salary, medical background,health education,compliance of health education, willingness to participate in decision making(P<0.05).(3) Self-efficacy, support from the medical staff,support from family and friends, personal support, support from media and policy, community support and nurse-patient trust were significantly related to patient empowerment (P<0.05).(4) Regression analysis showed that variables of monthly income, self-efficacy, support from the medical staff, confidence to the future and respect entered the model, accounted for 35.4%.(5) Through coding and analysis,6 themes have been figured out, including:patients’ perceptions of patient empowerment, patients’needs of patient empowerment, the status of medical staffs’empowerment behavior, influence of personal status on patient empowerment, influence of social support on patient empowerment, influence of family support on patient empowerment.Conclusions:(1)The level of patient empowerment was medium among the inpatient with chronic illness.The level of self-management was relatively high, the individualized service, the participation of health determination and the disease related information should be improved.(2)Some of the inpatient with chronic illness wanted to be empowered, but their perceptions of empowerment were relatively insufficient.(3)The influence factors of the patient empowerment included:the economy level, religious faith, medical knowledge, self-efficacy, self-care ability, health state, support from the medical staff, nurse-patient trust, hospital environment, accessibility of the medical resources, peer support, media and family support.(4)The empowerment level of inpatient with chronic illness could be improved by promoting the management and service of the hospital, enhancing the empowerment capacity of medical workers, strengthening social support and family support.
