ObjectiveThe prevalence of Allergic rhinitis (AR) is becoming more popular year after year and is also among the most frequent chronic multifactorial diseases. AR not only frequently causes adverse effect on emotion alterations and in terms of study and work productivity loss and absence. House dust mite (HDM) is the major allergen in Chinese population. HDM is the major causes of allergic respiratory disease and risk factor for AR and AA symptom. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of house dust mite subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) in children with allergic rhinitis and to evaluate patients’quality of life.Methods48 children with allergic rhinitis include 32 female and 10male were recruited into the study. The median of AR children age is 8.5 (6.0-11.0) years. The patients were investigated for SCIT with standardized allergen vaccine for 2 years. The medical history was record after completed two years treatment. The therapeutic evaluation index included:total nasal symptom score (TNSS), visual analogue scale (VAS), pediatric rhino-conjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire, (PRQLQ) as well as pediatric asthma quality of life questionnaire (PAQLQ). AR children were assessed before treatment and after 6 months,1 year and 2 years treatment. The software SPSS 19.0 was used to analyze the data.ResultsThe score of nasal congestion, nasal itching, sneezing, rhinorrhea and VAS score after 6 months,1 year,2 years treatment were significantly decreased as compared to the scores before treatment (P<0.05). The improvement of symptom between 6 months,1 year and 2 years treatment were also found. However, the symptoms of nasal congestion and rhinorrhea were disappeared 2 years treatment. The score of PRQLQ in children with AR was 4.00 (3.36-4.30) which had adverse effect on quality of life. The score of PRQLQ was reduced to 2.83 (2.20-3.26),2.30 (1.96-2.78) and 1.87 (1.61-2.22) after 6 months,1 year and 2 years treatment (P<0.05). Similarly, the scores of five aspects in the questionnaire were also found decreased trend. The significant difference between three treatment time points (6 months,1 year and 2 years) were also found which indicated the quality of life in AR patients were improved. The score of PAQLQ include (emotion, symptoms, activities aspect) were significantly higher in AR patients with asthma after 6 months treatment as compared to these before treatment. The similar tread was also found in AR patients with asthma after 1 year and 2 years treatment (P<0.05). The score of PAQLQ were different between 6 months,1 year and 2 years treatment (P<0.05). The quality of life of AR patients with asthma was improved after treatment.ConclusionThe improvement of symptoms and the quality of life were found after treatment. SCIT treatment is an efficient and safe treatment for children with allergic rhinitis.
