Objective:By observing how the treatment of Yang Jizhou’s "directional supplementation and draining " acupuncture to insomnia caused by disharmony between heart and kidney have effected on Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the syndrome of disharmony between heart and kidney index, the assessment regarding this acupuncture is provided containing both the clinical effect as well as its compliance and security property. Therefore, a new way of thinking is given and meanwhile, sufficient clinical experience is accumulated.Method:There were in total 66 patients who were diagnosed as insomnia caused by disharmony between heart and kidney. They were randomly divided into two groups comprised of 33 patients respectively-directional supplementation and draining acupuncture group (treatment group) and ordinary acupuncture group (control group). In terms of control group, the acupuncture treatment with ordinary diagnose of acupoint was applied. In terms of treatment group, after the ordinary acupuncture treatment, directional supplementation and draining technique was applied on xin jiaji on one side and directional supplementation technique was implemented on taixi on the same side. Ordinary acupuncture:1 time/day,5 times/week; directional supplementation and draining technique:1 time/day,5 times/week. The curative effect was compared between before and after the treatment, and was measured by PSQI, syndrome of disharmony between heart and kidney index and the sleep efficiency formula with international unity.Result:the clinical study had been well completed. There was strong comparability between two groups thanks to the similar baseline status (gender, age, course of disease, insomnia classification) (P>0.05). Moreover, PSQI did not displayed statistical discrepancy between two groups. When the treatment ended after 4 weeks, both group presented different levels of decrease (P<0.05) in PSQI (both total rating and rating of every element) as well as syndrome of disharmony between heart and kidney index. Comparison of treatment group and control group displayed statistically significant difference in PSQI and syndrome of disharmony between heart and kidney index (P<0.05), in which treatment group had rather low PSQI total rating. In the comparison of individual element rating in PSQI, treatment group presented better sleep quality and shorter sleep onset latency (P<0.05), whereas the rest elements had similar ratings. According to the evaluation of international sleep efficiency formula, there is statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in the curative effect between before and after treatment of both group and the improvement of treatment group was more obvious compared to control group. Moreover, in the classification of sleep curative effect assessment, treatment group’s proportion of recovery and effect onset was higher than control group. Last but not least, there was no statistical difference in compliance and security property (p>0.05).Conclusion:both Yang Jizhou’s directional supplementation and draining acupuncture and ordinary acupuncture had effect on insomnia patient, in which directional supplementation and draining was better in terms of PSQI rating. Among individual elements of PSQI, directional supplementation and draining displayed more effective result in improving sleep quality; sleep onset latency and daytime dysfunction. This experiment reveals yang Jizhou’s directional supplementation and draining technique is able to improve the clinical effect of acupuncture treatment to insomnia caused by disharmony between heart and kidney, which can efficiently improve sleep quality with high compliance and security.
