Objective:To explore the associate degree nursing students’ interpersonal needs in clinical practice and construct the interpersonal needs theory. To construct harmonious interpersonal relationship during clinical practice and improve the quality of clinical practice.Methods:The research used the theoretical sampling to select interviewees in 4 Chongqing medical university-affiliated teaching hospitals. The data were collected through deep interviews among 15 associate degree nursing students based on grounded theory. At the same time, in order to get more verification and supplementary data, the researcher went to the wards to observe 14 students by using a participatory observation. The content of interpersonal needs was affirmed by three-level coding and comparing repeatedly.Results:Get the theory framework as follows:interpersonal needs of associate degree nursing students in clinical practice are premised on the basis of nursing specialty and teaching arrangements. The needs include communication needs, self-esteem needs and self-actualization needs which come from the interacting with the teachers, nurses, patients and their families, baccalaureate degree nursing students and doctors.Conclusions:The research adapts to the situation of the development of higher nursing education in China. It takes the matter from associate degree nursing students and analyses their interpersonal needs during their practice. Based on grounded theory, the study expresses the types of the interpersonal needs finally in framework by summing up the characteristic information from the raw data and summarizing the important points. On the one hand, the study makes an attempt to use grounded theory method in nursing researches and it provides new ideas to future research. On the other hand, the index in the theory framework has a certain reference value, which provides the theoretical basis for improving the quality of clinical teaching.
