Objective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of intra-articular injections of autologous mesenchymal stem cells (Bone Mesenchymal Stem Cells,BMSCs)for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. And to assess the effect of autologous mesenchymal stem cells to knee osteoarthritis. In order to explore a new method for treat knee osteoarthritis. Methods:We enrolled 10 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee from 2013.09to 2014.07. The study group comprised 10 patients (4 men and 6 women), among whom the mean age was 48.4 years (range,42 to 57 years). In each patient the MSCs was harvested from the bone marrow by bone marrow aspirationient. After stem cells were isolated, a mean of 107 stem cells (range0.92×107 to 1.13×107stem cells) were prepared and injected into the selected knees of patients. Clinical outcome was evaluated with the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), Lysholm Score and the visual analog scale (VAS) for grading knee pain. We also carried on Satisfaction Survey at the final follow-up.Results:MSCs into the osteoarthritic knee improved function and pain of the knee joint without causing adverse events. KOOS scores improved significantly(P<0.05) from 61.19 points preoperatively to 78.62 points at the final follow-up. Lysholm scores improved from 49.64 points preoperatively to 86.70 points at the final follow-up. Likewise, changes in VAS scores throughout the follow-up period were also significant (P<0.05). the mean VAS score decreased from 4.5 preoperatively to 1.9 at the last follow-up visit. Conclusion:The results of our study are encouraging and show that intra-articular injection of autogenous iliac bone derived mesenchymal stem cells is effective for reducing pain and improving knee function in patients being treated for knee osteoarthritis.
