Objective1. To investigate the current status of application of blood pressure monitoring technology in a community in Songjiang District, Shanghai, and to evaluate the effectiveness and appropriateness of the technology.2. To analyse the related factors which affect the application of blood pressure monitoring technology and to provide recommendations for promoting the application of the technology.Subjects and MethodsA cross-sectionalstudy was conducted and153hypertensive patients who were under the management of local community health center in Songjiang District were sampled through a systematic sampling method. The subjects underwent a questionnaire survey and the content of which included accessibility, effectiveness, safety of the blood pressure monitoring technology, ratings of patients’satisfaction and compliance of the technology as well as the outpatient and emergency department and inpatient costs. An EpiData3.1software was used to establish the database and Statistical Analysis System version9.13was employed for data analysis. Data description was conducted by descriptive analysis method(mean, median, percentage, et al.). Data were analysed through F test, rank-sum test and Chi-square test.Results1. Adherence:143(93.5%) subjects mentioned they were told the regimens of blood pressure monitoring by their community practioners, of whom95.1%monitored their blood pressure under the doctors’advice.151(98.6%) patients reached a frequency of4times per year or more. And94.1%of the patients monitored their blood pressure12times each year or even more.2. Accessibility:91.5%of the subjects were able to walk to the community health centre within30minutes and97.2%of the patients received blood pressure monitoring service within 30minutes.3. Safety:More than99%of the patients reported discomfort during blood pressure monitoring and no one reported the leakage of their private and monitoring information.4. Effectiveness:The study manifested that83%of the subjects deemed blood pressure monitoring helped them to learn more about hypertension,81%held that the technology helped them to accompany with doctors to control their blood pressure levels and79%thought that the technology did assist them in identifying and coping with abnormal blood pressure.92%were aware of their blood pressure levels in the past3months and they were able to recall the exact values.5. Satisfaction:95%of the subjects were satisfied with the blood pressure monitoring discipline and their execution, nearly90%were satisfied with the effect of pressure monitoring.6. There was no correlation between the frequency of blood pressure monitoring and. the direct costs of both outpatient and emergency service.7. Home blood pressure monitoring:the current study manifested that the owning rate of sphygmomanometer was7.2%and45.5%of the owners monitored their blood pressure at home.Conclusions1. Blood pressure monitoring was able to help the patients to learn more about hypertension, accompany with doctors to control their blood pressure levels, assist them in identifying and coping with abnormal blood pressure and be aware of their blood pressure levels,which showed good effectiveness in its application.2. Blood pressure monitoring technology employed in Songjiang District is of good adherence, accessibility, safety and degrees of satisfaction and is appropriate to extend its community application in the future.
