ObjectiveThis study was to understand the status of self-management and self-efficiencyamong community hypertension patients, and to investigate the effect ofempowerment education to patients’ self-management and self-efficacy, in order toprovide a theoretical basis for future study and patients education.Methods100patients were selected by convenient sampling from two communities inChangchun.50patients from one community were set into the intervention group,and50patients from another community were set into the control group. Both of thetwo groups received traditional health education, while the intervention groupreceived empowerment based on this.Traditional health education was carried out inthe form of health lecture once a month, and empowerment education was carriedout in the form of one-on-one interviews or video calling once a month or more. Each time the education lasted for about40~50minutes for3months in all. Scalesfor patients’ self-management and self-efficiency were given to patients to valuetheir changes before and after this study. We used the Epidata3.02for data entryand SPSS13.0for statistical analysis.Results1.There was no statistical differences (P>0.05) between patients of the twogroups in scores of each dimension of self-management behaviors before theintervention. The intervention group patients’ score of each dimension ofself-management behaviors was higher than the control group(P<0.05).2.There was no statistical differences (P>0.05) between patients of the two groups in total scores of self-management behaviors before the intervention. Theintervention group patients’ total score of self-management behaviors was higherthan the control group(P<0.05). Three months later, the total score ofself-management behaviors of the two groups had been improved (P<0.05).3.There was no statistical differences (P>0.05) between patients of the twogroups in scores of each dimension of self-efficiency before the intervention. Theintervention group patients’ score of each dimension of self-efficiency was higherthan the control group(P<0.05)except for the health behavior dimension(P>0.05).4.There was no statistical differences (P>0.05) between patients of the twogroups in total scores of self-efficiency before the intervention. The interventiongroup patients’ total score of self-efficiency was higher than the controlgroup(P<0.05). The total score of self-efficiency of the two groups had beenimproved (P<0.05) compared with three months ago.Conclusion1.The status of self-management behavior among community hypertensionpatients is in the middle level.2.The status of self-efficiency among community hypertension patients is in themiddle level.3.Empowerment education can improve self-management behavior level amongcommunity hypertension patients.4.Empowerment education can improve self-efficiency level except for healthbehavior efficiency among community hypertension patients.
