Backgroud: Colorectal Cancer includes Colon Cancer and StraightColorectal Cancer, which is one of the most common malignanttumors. The incidence of Colorectal Cancer is just after gastric andesophageal in digestive tract malignancies. These years, the diseaseincidence and mortality rate have been increasing because of the changesof the life style and eating habits. Mucinous Colorectal Cancer is aspecial kind of histological type, including mucinous adenocarcinomaand signet ring adenocarcinoma. Compared with non-mucinousadenocarcinoma, mucinous adenocarcinoma appears easily on the rightsemi-colon. And its volume is larger, the degree of differetiation is lower, and the level of infiltration is deeper. It grows invastively towards theorganizatons around.Besides, it may result in Lymph node metastasisand distant metastasis. All of these factors lead to the poor prognosis of mucinous adenocarcinoma. The relationship between mucinousadenocarcinoma and prognosis is still under debate. Thus the treatment tomucinous adenocarcinoma is a hot issue. With the development ofMolecular Biology and Histilogy, new discoveries have been foundtowords the study of tumor. Matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs)candegrade besilar membrane and extracellular matrix and it promotes theinvasion and meatstasis of tumor. However, the expression in ColorectalCancer is reported less about MMP13.Objective: To investigate the expression of matrixmetalloproteinase-13(MMP-13) in mucinous and non-mucinouscolorectal cancer (CRC) tissues and its clinical significance.Methods:180cases of colorectal cancer tissues, including90casesof mucinous CRC and90cases of non-mucinous CRC, were made intotissue microarray. Then the expression of MMP-13was determinedusingimmunohistochemical method.Chi-squaretest was used to analyzethe relationships of theclinicopathologicalfeatures between mucinous andnon-mucinous CRCand their relationship with MMP-13expression.Results: Mucinous CRCwas significantly associated with young age, more depth of invasion, higher lymph node metastasis rate andlessintratumoral and peritumoral neutrophil infiltration, but not withgender, tumor size, tumor location and tumor growing appearance. TheMMP-13positive rate of non-mucinous CRCtissues was significantly higher than that of mucinous CRC tissues. Although the negative and lowexpression of MMP-13, mucinous CRChad more depth of invasion andhigher lymph node metastasis rate than those of non-mucinous CRC.Conclusions: In the treatment of colorectal cancer, targetingMMP-13can be beneficial in non-mucinous CRCrather than mucinousCRC.
