Study Of Clinical Value Of Capsule Endoscopy In Small-intestinal Complicated Diseases

Objective:The small bowel is the most difficult part of the bowel to be examined owing to the distance from the mouth to anus. Capsule endoscopy (CE) is a new technique for the visualization of the entire small bowel. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical v(?)e of CE in small-intestinal complicated diseases.Methods:Two hundred forty three patients with chronic abdominal pain and two hundred forty eight patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding with no significant lesions were enrolled in this study. All the subjects who underwent capsule endoscopy were treated at the First Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University between January2006and December2012. The clinical data was analyzed retrospectively.Results:A diagnosis was made in23.0%of patients who complained of obscure abdominal pain. Of the243patients screened with CE, the pathological type includes Crohn’s disease (7.8%), enteritis (6.2%), idiopathic intestinal lymphangiectasia (4.5%), uncinariasis (2.1%), small-bowel tumor (1.2%), ascariasis (0.8%), and anaphylactoid purpura (0.4%). A diagnosis was made in59.7%of patients who complained of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. Of the248patients screened with CE, the pathological type includes small-bowel vascular malformation (18.1%), small-bowel telangiectasis (9.3%), enteritis(10.9%), Crohn’s disease (6.0%), small-bowel diverticular (5.2%), small-bowel tumor (2.8%), uncinariasis (2.8%), small-bowel polyps (2.8%), small-bowel xanthoma (0.4%), small intestinal lymphoma (0.8%), and small-bowel lipoma (0.8%).Conclusions:Capsule endoscopy had high diagnostic yield in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding and abdominal pain, which was strongly recommended in investigating of small-bowel diseases.
