In china, epidemiological profile of Lumbar degenerative disease and cause of deathafter operation are still empty. The effects of age, gender, treatment, and other factorsaffected the risk of death and mortality will be a big difference. Epidemiologicalcharacteristics of lumbar degenerative disease and the risk of death after operation hasimportant significance in Chinese population. Objective:Collect date from the Beijing Workers Medicare Library and analyzeepidemiology characteristics of lumbar degenerative disease and postoperativemortality risk and characteristics in Beijing workers group. Methods: We checked the Beijing Workers Medicare Library database from January2004to December2013, filtered patients related information about the treatment oflumbar degenerative disease, concerned about the epidemiological characteristics ofdifferent ages and genders, and their survival after surgery, calculated postoperativemortality of different ages and gender groups, compared with the overall mortality incorresponding normal population, analyzed the characteristics and risk of deathcaused by operation of degenerative lumbar disease. Results: The hospitalization rate of lumbar degenerative disease in database was0.58%,65-74year-old age group for the high incidence of hospitalization. Surgicaltreatment37119people (59.36%), conservative treatment25409people (40.44%). Themortality rate was1.73%within10years postoperative,386male deaths with themortality rate of2.21%,257female deaths with the mortality1.31%(P=0.4925).Themortality rate was0.37%in less than65years group,4.55%mortality rate in65-74year-old age group,20.99%mortality rate in75years and over group (p=0.0007). The mortality rate was1.95%in fusion and internal fixation surgery group,1.65%in decompression alone surgery group,1.32%in disc surgery alone.Perioperative mortality rate was0.11%. The top four cause of death were cancer, lung disease, cerebrovascular accident and cardiac events, accounted for43.39%、19.91%、9.80%、8.40%.Conclusions:For Beijing workers residents, incidence of degenerative diseasesincreases year by year, particularly in the population of older than65years. Mortalityof lumbar degenerative disease in surgery for10years had no significant differencewith the overall population. There was no significant difference between operation andunoperation in mortality. The mortality increased with the age older. Cancer, lungdisease, cerebrovascular accident, heart events were the top four leading causes ofdeath.
