With the development of social economy and the change of individual’s lifestyle, the incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) increases rapidly, becoming a major public health problem. It’s important to find out better ways to prevent the incidence and improve the treatment of DM. In ancient China, people had a long history of having knowledge about DM, and with the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), knowledge about the disease had been accumulated, leaving a rich record about the diagnosis and treatment of the disease in ancient literature. Therefore, it’s significant to explore the understanding of ancient TCM about DM in a systematic way. In ancient time, people recognize DM as "Xiaoke", so in this study, Xiaoke is used as the key word in the searching. In modern time, with the change of natural and social environment as well as the influence of modern medicine, how TCM understands about DM has changed compare with the knowledge in ancient time, and reflects certain characteristics of the time. So, it is important to summarize and inherit the knowledge of how contemporary TCM doctor understand about the diseaseThere are two parts in this study. In the first part, it has been explored in a systematic way among ancient literature of the ancient name, the cause, the pathogenesis, the clinical manifestation and the treatment of DM. In the second part, the theory and experience of Professor Wei Junping about the treatment of DM using TCM ways are summarized.Part 1 The study about the theoretical origin, the development and the connotation of Xiaoke based on ancient Chinese medical literature. Objective:Explore thoroughly in ancient Chinese medical literature about the name, the cause, the pathogenesis, the clinical manifestation and different ways of treatment of Xiaoke-related disease and get a comprehensive view about how ancient Chinese doctors understand about the disease by looking in to the materials and summarizing how the knowledge of Xiaoke developed during different time in order to provide reference for the contemporary clinical treatment of DM.Method:To combine traditional literature searching method and modern information retrieval technology and Search ancient Chinese medical literature from pre-Qin to Qing dynasty about the name, the cause, the pathogenesis, the clinical manifestation and different ways of treatment of Xiaoke-related disease using the keyword Xiaoke. To be specified, there are six steps in the searching, including getting knowledge about ancient literature history, information retrieval, literature screening, the summarizing of the academic ideas of certain literature, the discussion of the academic development, ect.Result:There are four parts in this section, including the development and paraphrase of the name of Xiaoke-related disease, the syndrome differentiation and treatment of Xiaoke, the medicine treatment of Xiaoke and the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of Xiaoke. In every part, the method of periodic history is used, and with historical development as the main line, the academic characteristics of every historical period about Xiaoke are discussed.Part 2 The introduction of Professor Wei Junping’s academic theory about the treatment of DM using TCM.In this part, Professor Wei Junping’s academic theory about the treatment of DM using TCM ways is summarized, including the modern characteristic of DM, the thought about the normalization of TCM name of DM, the discussion about the cause of DM in modern environment, the pathogenesis traits of DM, and clinical treatment experience.Professor Wei propose that in modern time, the understanding of TCM about DM has changed compared with ancient time and shows modern characteristics; modern TCM name of DM should be normalized in order to avoid ambiguity and confusion, and the difference between "Xiaoke" and "Xiaoke disease" should be understood; the cause of DM has changed in some ways compared with ancient time; the pathogenesis of DM in modern time has change as well compared with ancient time, and the disease location includes "Shangjiao", " Zhongjiao" and " Xiajiao"; the method of combining disease with symptom complex be used in the treatment of DM and comprehensive management model is applied.
