ObjectiveTo study the state and the influencing factors of PBMC telomerase activity and gerotranscendence in the community pre-elderly; To explore effects of Tai Chi on PBMC telomerase activity and gerotranscendence in the community pre-elderly, so as to provide reference basis for communities to promote health.MethodsFrom October 2013 to April 2014, four hundred and fifty community-dwelling older adults were investigated by convenience sampling method using a general information questionnaire and gerotranscendence scale in a certain community of Hengyang city to know about the sate of community pre-elderly, and influencing factors of gerotranscendence were analysed. By convenience sampling method, ninety-six pre-elderly who met standards of recruit had been recruited in a certain community of Hengyang city, and we investigated baseline information of both groups, including general information, investigationof gerotranscendence and detection of PBMC telomerase activity. Ninety-six pre-elderly were assigned randomly into two groups: intervention group and control group, forty-eight in each group. At pre-intervention, Intervening the pre-elderly in the intervention group by Tai Chi exercise for six months, while remaining unchanged lifestyle in the control group. Detecting PBMC telomerase activity by TE-ELISA, and investigating gerotranscendence through gerotranscendence questionnaire in the pre-elderly at pre-intervention and after six months. all data analysis was conducted with SPSS 13.0, data analysis methods included descriptive statistic analysis, χ2 test, one-way ANOVA analysis, correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis. A P value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.Results1 The state and influencing factors of gerotranscendence and PBMC telomerase activity about the community pre-elderlyThe total mean score of gerotranscendence was(2.67±0.59) in the community pre-elderly, which was above the intermediate level. Among the mean scores of three dimensions of gerotranscendence, the mean score of cosmic transcendence(2.86±0.62) was the highest, while the mean score of coherence(2.45±0.75) was the lowest. Sex, living arrangements, regular exercise, religious affiliation, chronic diseases influenced gerotranscendence, having a significant difference(P<0.05).Sex, living arrangements, regular exercise, religious affiliation, chronic diseases had correlations with gerotranscendence. Multiple linear regression analysis illustrated that sex, living arrangements, regular exercise, religious affiliation, chronic diseases were the main factors influencing gerotranscendence in the community pre-elderly(R2=0.613, P=0.000). The covariates explained about 59.9% of the variation about gerotranscendence.PBMC telomerase activity in the community pre-elderly was(23.84±4.21) u/mmol, which was above the intermediate level. Different age, whether smoking and drinking or not, had an impact on PBMC telomerase activity in the community pre-elderly, and had statistically significant(P<0.05). Correlation analysis of PBMC telomerase activity illustrated that PBMC telomerase activity had negative correlations with age, smoking, drinking. Multiple linear regression analysis illustrated that age, smoking, drinking were the main factors influencing PBMC telomerase activity in the community pre-elderly(R2=0.566, P<0.05). The covariates explained about 55.4% of the variation in PBMC telomerase activity.2 Effects of Tai Chi on gerotranscendence about the community pre-elderlyCompared to pre-intervention, gerotranscendence had a significant difference in the intervention group after six months intervention(P<0.05),and compared to the control group, gerotranscendence in the intervention group had significant differences after six months intervention(P<0.05).3 Effects of Tai Chi on PBMC telomerase activity about the community pre-elderly.Compared to pre-intervention, PBMC telomerase activity in the intervention group had significant differences after six months intervention(P<0.05), and compared to the control group, PBMC telomerase activity in the intervention group had significant differences after six months intervention(P<0.05).4 Correlations between gerotranscendence and PBMC telomerase activity about the community pre-elderlyPBMC telomerase activity with gerotranscendence had a positive correlation in the community pre-elderly(r=0.325), and had statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions1 The overall level of gerotranscendence was in the intermediate level, and sex, regular exercise, religious affiliation, living arrangements, chronic diseases were the main influencing factors of gerotranscendence; PBMC telomerase activity in the pre-elderly was in the intermediate level, and age, smoking, drinking were the main influencing factors of PBMC telomerase activity.2 Tai Chi could improve gerotranscendence among the communitypre-elderly3 Tai Chi could increase PBMC telomerase activity among the community pre-elderly.4 The higher of PBMC telomerase activity, the higher of gerotranscendence among the community pre-elderly.
