‘Palladium catalyzed cross coupling reaction’ was an exquisite tool. Chemists can use it to engrave and connect building blocks(small groups), and produce beautiful arts(complex organic chemical molecules) like artists.1, 3-indanedione derivatives have many important biological activities, including cytotoxicity, EGFR inhibiting activities and antiallergic activities. Based on the principle of ‘palladium catalyzed cross coupling reaction’, tert-butyl isocyanide was selectively inserted into the substrates with active methylene and two series of 1,3-indanedione derivatives were successfully synthesized with Pd Cl2(PPh3)2 as catalysis system. This method characterized with cheap materials, simple and effective reaction process, according with ‘atom economy’, is suitable to construct the compound library. This study provides a new example of building intramolecular C-C bond by isocyanides insertion.
