Objective To investigate the effect of retinal photocoagulation(frequency multiplication: 532 nm) on diabetic retinopathy. Methods A total of 68 patients(129 eyes) with diabetic retinopathy underwent retinal photocoagulation were enrolled in this study. There were 86 eyes with pre-proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PPDR), 31 eyes with early stage proliferative diabetic retinopathy(early stage PDR)and 12 eyes with high risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy(high risk PDR). Duration of diabetes, fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin were detected before surgery. The visual acuity and retina were detected after surgery. Results The duration of diabetes were significantly longer in early stage PDR and high risk PDR groups than that in PPDR group(both P<0.05). The fasting plasma glucose was significantly higher in high risk PDR group than those in early stage PDR and PPDR group(both P<0.05). The level of glycosylated hemoglobin were significantly higher in high risk PDR and early stage PDR group than that in PPDR group(both P<0.05). The level of glycosylated hemoglobin in high risk PDR group was significantly higher than that in early stage PDR group(both P<0.05). The total effective rate of visual acuity was 72.1%(93/129). The effective rate of visual acuity was 74.4%(64/86) in PPDR group and 77.4%(24/31) in early stage PDR group, which were significantly higher than that in high risk PDR group(5/12, both P<0.05). The total effective rate of retinopathy was 76.7%(99/129). The effective rate of retinopathy was 81.4%(70/86) in PPDR group and 74.2%(23/31) in early stage PDR group, which were significantly higher than that in high risk PDR group(6/12, both P<0.05).Conclusion The severity of diabetic retinopathy depends on the duration and control of diabetes. Retinal photocoagulation for treatment of diabetic retinopathy and earlier treatment has better effect.
