Objective To investigate the expression of MT2-MMP in gastric cancer and its correlation with prognosis. Methods Expression of MT2-MMP was assessed by immunohistochemistry(IHC) in tissue microarrays containing paired tumor and peritumoral tissues from 90 patients who had undergone gastric resection for histologically proven gastric cancer. Chi-square test was utilized to analyze the relationship between MT2-MMP expression and clinicopathological features. Overall survival(OS) of different clinicopathological characteristics was compared using Kaplan-Meier and Log-rank test. The Cox proportional hazards model was performed to estimate HR(Hazard Risk) with 95% CI(Confidence Interval) of the linking strength between the different clinical characteristics, expression of MT2-MMP and death risks. Results The MT2-MMP expression level was higher in tumor tissues in contrast to peritumor tissues(the mean H-score were 246 and 139 respectively, P<0.01). No significant correlation was found between the MT2-MMP expression with gender, age, tumor size, pathological stage, TNM stage(all P>0.05). Both univariate and multivariate analyses demonstrated that high MT2-MMP expression was a negative prognostic indicator of OS(HR=2.185, 95%CI, 1.175-4.064, P=0.011 HR=1.997, 95%CI, 1.042-3.830, P=0.037,respectively).Conclusion High expression of MT2-MMP was associated with poor prognosis.
