Objective: To investigate the effect of acetabulum cover plus bone graft to treat acetabular dysplasia of experimental rabbits. To provide the experimental basis for acetabular dysplasia treated by the clinical application of acetabulum cover.Methods: 15 New Zealand rabbits were selected. Their bilateral hip joints were made into acetabular dysplasia model. The left and right lateral joints were taken as self-contrast. The left hip joints were taken as experimental group. The acetabulum cover plus autogenous cancellous bone graft was used to modify acetabular dysplasia. The right hip joints were taken as control group. The iliac bone autograft fixed by Kirschner wire plus bone graft were used to modify acetabular dysplasia. The general condition and gait were observed after operation. 5 rabbits were executed in 4, 8 and 12 weeks for hip bone gross and histological observation. The bone graft fusion was observed and the modified Pineda score of hip joint cartilage repair was conducted.Results: The experimental rabbits survived.All incisions were primary healing. The bilateral hindlimb gait did not differ. X-ray examination showed no hip joint dislocation after all rabbits were sacrificed. The enveloping of acetabulum to caputfemoris was good. No internal fixation occurred to loosen, shed or fracture.Gross specimen and histological observation showed that the connection of bone graft with hip bone in experimental group was more earlier and solider than that of control group. The healing occurred after bone grafting in two groups in postoperative 12 weeks. The acetabular articular cartilage surface was repaired. The Pineda score of hip joint articular cartilage repaired by two methods were compared. The differences in substrate staining, surface roughness, combination with the host and total score in experimental group were significant compared with control group(P<0.0001). The cell morphologies showed significant difference between two groups(P<0.05). But the thickness of articular cartilage showed no significant difference(P> 0.05).Conclusion: 1. Similar with bone graft fixed by Kirschner wire, bone graft fixed by acetabulum cover could be used to repair rabbit acetabular dysplasia. 2. The effect of acetabulum cover plus bone graft to treat acetabular dysplasia of experimental rabbits was better.
