Objective The objective of the study was to investigate the influence of self-management programme on the self-care ability, anxiety, catheter-related complications and maintenance cost in home care oncohematologic patients with peripherally inserted central catheters(PICC).Methods Seventy oncohematologic patients with PICC were randomly divided into control group(n=35) and intervention group(n=35). The control group received the routine care which included education brochure, maintenance handbook, weekly maintenance and coming to hospital with any discomfort. The intervention group received the self-management programme on the basis of routine care, in which patients and their families were educated and trained on catheter maintenance, complication observation and follow-up. Self-care ability, anxiety, catheter-related complications and maintenance cost were observed 10 th day and 30 th day after intervention. Results The scores of self-care ability in intervention group were significantly higher than that in control group(P<0.05); The scores of anxiety in intervention group were well significantly lower than that in control group(P<0.01); Within 30 days after catheter placement, 4 cases of phlebitis, 3 cases of mild skin allergy, 5 cases of puncture site bleeding, 2 cases of incomplete catheter obstruction, 2 cases of catheter dislodgment occurred in intervention group, while 3 cases of phlebitis, 4 cases of mild skin allergy, 6 cases of puncture site bleeding, 1 cases of incomplete catheter obstruction, 3 cases of catheter dislodgment occurred in control group. The incidences of catheter-related complications were not significantly differcent in two groups(P>0.05); The maintenance cost in intervention group was well significantly lower than that in control group(P<0.01).Conclusions Self-management programme can effectively improve the self-care ability, relieve the anxiety, prevent the catheter-related complications and reduce the maintenance cost in home care oncohematologic patients with PICC.
