Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of renal artery stent combined with regular medical therapy as treatment for renal artery stenosis.Method:A prospective cohort study was conducted and patients received percutaneous renal artery stent between September 2011 and March 2013 because of poorly controlled hypertension or preservation of renal function were enrolled. The patients also received optimal medical therapy to achieve the targets of blood pressure, lipids and blood glucose. All of them subsequently underwent 12-month follow-up to observe the effect of the procedure on blood pressure control, number of antihypertensive medications and creatinine level. Results:Stents were placed in 185 renal arteries of the 149 patients, mean stenosis was (83.11±7.30)%. The success rate of renal artery stent was 99.32%. At 12 months after the procedure estimated glomerular filtration rate increased significantly compared with the baseline[(84.09±28.79)VS (76.49±22.50) ml/(min·1.73 m 2), P<0.05] Meanwhile both office blood pressure and 24-hours mean blood pressure significantly decreased compared with the baseline (from 153.4/83.77 mmHg to 134.6/73.57mmHg and from 143.32/80.51mmHg to 124.44/69.09mmHg, respectively; P<0.05), and less antihypertensive medication was taken compared with the baseline [(1.56±0.82) VS (2.22±0.96),P<0.05].Conclusions: Renal artery stent combined with regular medical therapy as a treatment has a beneficial effect on blood pressure control and on estimated glomerular filtration rate in carefully selected patients with atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis.
