Autoimmune thyroid diseases(AITD) is result from a deregulation of the immune system leading to an immune attack on the thyroid gland, which can affect multiple systems of our body. The most common AITD are Graves disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis.Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy is also belongs to AITD.The identification of novel helper T(Th) cell subsets which is IL-17-producing Th cells(Th17 cells) provided new insight for our understanding of the traditional help T cell system which only include Th1 and Th2 cells and the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of autoimmune diseases. In recent years,Th17 cells has attracted more and more attention. The data which come from different research institutions ha ve proved the important role of Th17 cells in many kinds of auimmune diseases.Th17 cells may also contribute to the pat hogenesis of autoimmune thyroid disorders including Graves d isease,Hashimoto thyroiditis and Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy. In this review,we summarize the current knowledge about the potential roles of IL-17 and Th17 cells in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid diseases.
