ObjectiveWith strictly estimation of quality and comprehensive analysis of Chinese medicine treatment for randomized controlled trials published in treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes and carotid artery sclerosis, to obtain the evidence-based medicine basis for the safety and clinical efficacy of Chinese medicine treatment in type 2 diabetes patients with carotid artery sclerosis as well.MethodsThe major databases were searched until January 2015 and supplemented with a manual search. Chinese databases were searched from CBM, CNKI, VIP and WANFANG; foreign database from Pubmed and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. To search these databases for randomized controlled trial of Chinese medicine treatment in type 2 diabetes with carotid artery sclerosis. According to the inclusion/exclusion criteria screening test and the Cochrane risk of bias table to assess the study quality, the extraction and statistical analysis was extracted and performed by using Revman5.3 software.ResultsFinally 24 literature searches were included in this systematic review, a total of 2166 patients. This review got to the result that Chinese medicine can improve patients’symptoms, also FPG,2hPG, HbAlc, IMT, carotid plaque, NO, ET-1 as well.Herbal medicines plus basic therapy versus basic therapy:study of 8 studies reported the clinical inefficiency of which all show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 12 studies reported the FPG of which 4 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 6 studies reported the 2hPG of which 4 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 12 studies reported the HbAlc of which 9 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 14 studies reported the IMT of which 12 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 7 studies reported the carotid plaque of which 6 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 2 studies reported the NO of which both show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 1 studies reported the ET-1 and it shows that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 1 studies reported the 6-Keto-PGF1α and fell to show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly.Herbal medicines plus basic therapy versus Western medicine plus basic therapy:study of 3 studies reported the clinical inefficiency of which all show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly;3 studies reported the FPG of which 1 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 1 studies reported the 2hPG and fell to show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 2 studies reported the HbA1c of which both studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 6 studies reported the IMT of which 2 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 2 studies reported the carotid plaque of which 1 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 1 studies reported the NO and it shows that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 1 studies reported the ET-1 and it shows that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 1 studies reported the 6-Keto-PGF1α and fell to show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly.Herbal medicines plus basic therapy versus another herbal medicine plus basic therapy:study of 2 studies reported the clinical inefficiency of which both show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly;2 studies reported the FPG of which both studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 2 studies reported the 2hPG of which both studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 2 studies reported the HbAlc of which 1 studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; 2 studies reported the IMT of which both studies show that Chinese medicine combined with basic therapy compared with basic therapy significantly; There were no studies reported the carotid plaque, NO, ET-1 and 6-Keto-PGF1α.Three studies described the treatment group had mild gastrointestinal discomfort, tired or liver and kidney harm. The gastrointestinal discomfort and tired can relieve itself without any treatment. The liver and kidney harm didn’t show significantly with another group. ConelusionAlthough there were some flaws of methodological quality included in the study, the results were encouraging. The therapy of Chinese medicine had a certain advantages on improving clinical symptoms as well as the quality of life.
