ObjectTo compare the effect of the treatment for syndesmosis injury with the AO screw or not after fracture reduction.MethodsA retrospective study was done on 30 patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment of orthopedic trauma surgery, with syndesmosis injury in close ankle fractures from June 2012 to August 2014. Thrity patients were divided into two groups. Fifteen patients (A group) were treat by screws fixation syndesmosis diastasis in ankle fractures. Fifteen patients (B group) only with open reduction without screw fixation syndesmosis diastasis. Age, gender, fracture type, the difference syndesmosis gap parameter and postoperative curative effects were compared between two groups.ResultsAll patients were followed up from 8 to 36 months with an average of 18.8 months. The two groups in age, gender and type of fracture comparison were no statistically significant.Raiographic measurements were detailed as follows: A group mean total tibiofibular clear space (6.47±1.94) mm in preoperative and (3.99±0.97) mm in postoperative;B group mean total tibiofibular clear space(6.55±2.87)mm in preoperative and(4.13±1.21)mm in postoperative. There was significant difference between preoperative and preoperative (P<0.05). Preoperative and preoperative comparison between the two groups were no statistically significant (P>0.05).According to AOFAS effective evaluation criteria, there was no statistically significant between the two groups (P>0.05).ConclusionWithout AO screw for syndesmosis injury in close ankle fractures, only reduction the fracture, also have good performance in X-ray image and good joint function.
