[Background][Objective] To investigate the surgical method, recurrence and prognosis of patients who have neurofibroma at head and neck.[Methods] Retrospective review of 46 consecutive cases from January 1999 to Marth 2013.[Results] 41 patients have been followed up, including 26 patients who have been cured and 15 patients who have not been cured(two died). The cure rate of the neurofibroma with NF1 and the neurofibroma without NF1 were 42.9% and 85.0%, respectively (P=0.005). The cure rate of local neurofibroma, aggressive neurofibroma, diffuse neurofibroma and beaded neurofibroma were 100%,46.6%,40.0% and 66.7%, respectively (P=0.009). The cure rate of radical resection (including expanding excision and complete resection) and partial resection were 73.5% and 14.3% (P=0.011). The cure rate of expanding excision and partial resection were 80.0% and 14.3% (P=0.029). The cure rate of complete resection and partial resection were 70.8% and 14.3%(P=0.026). But expanding excision and complete resection didn’t have statistically difference in the cure rate (P=0.581).Multivariate Cox model analysis confirmed that thoroughness of surgery was independent risk factors for the prognosis of neurofibroma at head and neck.[Conclusions] Neurofibroma is a kind of aggressive benign tumour. Part of tumours have high relapse rate and low recovery rate, and part of nerves are essay to be injured in the operation. Lots of elements impact on the conditions of prognosis and recovery of neural function. Therefore, selecting surgical opportunity and method need to be deliberative.
