Petroclival area is made up of temporal bone.sphenoid and occipital composition, which is especially deep, adjacent to the brain stem, multiple pairs of cranial nerves(Cranial nerve dominated), vertebral- basilar artery and some other important anatomical and organizational structures.such as tumors(mostly are benign tumors)occur on the premises, which often infringe on cerebellopontine angle area and slope area(upper, middle and lower slopes) at the same time, Even before reach the base of the skull and other regional areas and it also can invade the dura mater, both inside and outside. So by means of traditional surgery to resect the tumor of petroclival area is quite difficult, owing to that different surgical approach will directly affect patients and postoperative complications related to prognosis, so studying the surgical approach and being skilled to master its classification for us to carry out the clinical treatment of the petroclival region tumor is very critical.Petroclival area was once considered by scholars as to be restricted neurosurgery, However,in recent years, because of neurosurgery scholars ’ understanding and researches on the area of petroclival area surgical approaches are increasing, and also neurosurgery technology( microneurosurgery technology, stereotactic techniques, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and imaging, etc.) [1] and the continuous development of neurosurgical instruments, neurosurgeon have been exploring and improving commonly performed surgical approach of resecting petroclival tumors. This article is reviewed about a variety of petroclival region surgical approaches.
