ObjectiveTo investigate CT and MRI images of the patients with tongue diseases, andstudy the application value of CT and MRI in the diagnosis of tongue lesions.MethodsMRI and CT images of33cases with tongue diseases proved by pathology wereanalyzed retrospectively. Of the33cases,22were tongue cancer,11were benignlesion;20patients were men, others were women. Mean patients age was65.9years.All the tongue cancer was oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC).In the group ofbenign lesion,1was ulcerative eosinophilic granuloma,1was pyogenic granuloma,7were benign ulceration, and2were lymphangioma happened in the tongue base.5had CT scan,27had MRI scan, and1had CT and MRI scan at the same time.Meantime all of them had enhanced examination. We analyzed these images andcompared them with the results of surgical pathologyResults(1) In the group of tongue cancer,it showed ulcer、infiltrate or nodule mass in CTand MRI images, with obvious contrast and clear delimitation. While in thebenign tongue disease group, these was no lump showed, except ulcerativeeosinophilic granuloma. By chi-square test, it had been proved that whether it had mass placeholder effect had statistical significance in identification ofbenign and malignant lesions of tongue on MRI(P=0.000), while whether ithad ring-enhancement didn’t(P=0.667).(2) There were8tongue cancer patients with both MRI examinations andoperations in our hospital. Lymph node metastasis rate was85.7%(6/7) whenthe major diameter of tongue cancer on MRI was greater than or equal to2cm,and0%when that was less than2cm.(3) In the comparation of TNM staging made by MRI and pathology, thecoincidence rate was87.5%in both tumor size and lymphatic metastasis, except the size of1case measured by MRI was larger than its actual size andthe lymphatic metastasis of1case (N1stage) wasn’t found in MRI.ConclusionsCT and MRI scan are valuable for the found of lesions happened in the tonguedeep tissue and differential diagnosis of tongue disease. They can give hints aboutTNM staging of malignant tumor to give the doctors directions to formulatetherapeutic schedule, evaluate treatment effect and predict the prognosis ofpatients.
