Objective:Research the accuracy of noninvasive soft tissue thickness detection and preciselocation on the surface of bone based on the principle of ultrasonic echo ranging inorthopedic three-dimensional navigation. Improve the accuracy of ultrasoundnoninvasive registration technique applied to the orthopedic three-dimensionalnavigation surgery.Materials and Methods:Porcine soft tissue was divided into4groups within the range of20mm to50mm inthickness. A-mode ultrasound wave which penetrated soft tissue was displayed onoscilloscope and analyzed to pick up the interface echo and calculate the thickness.Simultaneously the thickness was mechanically measured by calipers. The thicknessdifference was carried out by statistical method. Results:The thickness accuracy obtained by A-mode ultrasound was able to reach theprecision of sub-millimeter compared to the mechanical measurement with theerror ranging in0.056mm to0.397mm. No statistical significance was showed afterpaired-samples t test in each group (p>0.05).Conclusion:The method of picking up the interface based on ultrasound reveals a lower error, providing a better accuracy for the registration procedure and navigation system.
