Although the past two decades witnessed a huge progress in drugtreatment, congestive heart failure is still one of the most intractablecardiovascular diseases with high prevalence and mortality worldwidenowadays. To seek after new and effective treatments for that and improvethe prognosis of heart failure patients have been a long-term focus forcardiologist worldwide. Recent studies demonstrate that a large proportionof heart failure patients are complicated by anemia and it has been provedthat anemia is closely correlated with the prognosis of heart failure patients.Compared with heart failure patients without anemia, patients thatcomplicated with anemia usually have more severe symptoms and shorterlife expectancy. Nonetheless, a number of clinical trials indicated thattreatment for anemia with iron agents or erythropoietin stimulating agents(ESA) could effectively ameliorate symptoms and decrease long-termmortality for heart failure patients. Questions concerning heart failure andanemia has aroused the attentions of cardiologists and becomes a hot topicin the field of heart failure. This paper aims to present a comprehensive introduction of heart failure complicated by anemia including etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prospect of it.
