Objective To define ultrasonic measurement of a normal pancreas value. To analyze the related causes of pancreatic damage in children, and summarize ultrasonic characteristics. Methods We randomly selected1009children who did physical examination in our hospital.Ultrasound detected the pancreas and measured the head of the pancreas, pancreatic body and tail of the pancreas as well as pancreatic duct, and measured the height and weight of children. Then to retrospectively study the clinnical data of286hospitalized children with pancreas abnormal by ultrasound. To a analyze their related causes and ultrasound features. Results Among1009cases, age, height, and weight were correlated with pancreatic measured values (r=0.403-0.696,P<0.01). Correlation was best between weight and pancreatic measured value (r=0.541-0.696rP<0.01). Among age, height, and weight, it was weight that had a maximum regression coefficient (b’=0.524-0.837,P<0.01). Among286cases,70cases (24.5%) were infection,53cases (18.5%) were systemic non-infection diseases, idiopathic pancreatitis in38cases (13.3%), and36cases of traumatic pancreatic injury (12.6%), biliary tract disease in34cases (11.9%), kidney disease in16cases (5.6%), congenital anatomic abnormalities of the pancreas in6cases (2.1%), gastrointestinal diseases in5cases (1.7%),8cases of pancreatic tumor (2.8%), other causes in20cases (7%).Ultrasonic characteristics of pancreatic damage: The transient pancreatic damage group and mild damage group showed a slightly swollen but the edge was clear in pancreas, the echo of pancreas is uniform or slightly enhanced. The last one showed the expansion of pancreatic duct and effusion in the peripancreatic or the cavity of body. The severely damage group showed the pancreas manifest swelling with blur form profile and the edget, echogenicity were enhanced or uneven.Furthermore, effusion was seen in the peripancreatic or other cavity or a pseudocyst was found. Conclusions Pancreatic value was enlarged along with age as well as with height, body and weight; however, gender was found to have little effect. Weight and measurement of the pancreas in children are most closely related and has the biggest influence. Based on these findings, a preliminary protocol measuring reference range of pancreas in children can be gotten. The causes of pancreatic damage include infection, systemic non-infection disease, idiopathic pancreatitis. Each groups of pancreatic damage has its characteristic.
